Battery EPR Registration in India for Producers

Battery EPR registration is the CPCB registration every battery producer, including importers and brand owners, must obtain in Form 1(A) under the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022. LexComply maps each battery to its category, files on the CPCB battery portal, plans collection targets and files the annual returns, tracking all of it on a platform used by 450+ corporate clients.

Battery Category Mapping

Every battery you place on the market mapped to 1 of the 4 categories the Rules define: portable (sealed, under 5 kg), automotive, industrial including energy storage, or electric vehicle, chemistry by chemistry.

Collection Target Planning

Your Schedule II collection target worked out from the quantity placed on the market in the base year, for example 70% for EV two-wheeler batteries from 2026-27, then tracked through the compliance year.

Plan My Targets

Recycler Certificates for Targets

Certificates bought only from registered recyclers and refurbishers on the portal, within the same battery category and inside the CPCB price band of 30% to 100% of the environmental compensation rate.

Form 1(C) and Form 3 Returns

Both annual producer returns, Form 1(C) on batteries placed on the market and Form 3 on the obligation met, normally due by 30 June. For 2025-26 the deadline was extended to 30 November 2026.

How Battery EPR Registration Works With LexComply

Producer Assessment

We establish whether your business in India is a producer under the Rules: a manufacturer selling under its own brand, a brand owner, an importer of batteries or of equipment containing them, or a contract manufacturer. The output is a written note naming each entity that must register.

Category and Quantity Data

We map every battery to its category and chemistry and collect the quantities you placed on the market, including batteries sold inside equipment and used for your own operations, because your Form 1(A) application and every later target rest on these figures.

Form 1(A) Filing

We file Form 1(A) with the Central Pollution Control Board on the battery EPR portal, answer its questions on the application, and keep every submission on record. Registration is valid until cancelled, so the work after grant is targets and returns, not renewals.

Labelling and Targets

We check that each battery or pack carries the wheeled bin symbol, any heavy-metal symbols and your registration number, then set your Schedule II collection target for the year and plan how much of it registered recyclers' certificates will cover.

Certificates and Returns

We help you buy certificates within the CPCB price band, then prepare Form 1(C) and Form 3 and file both by the annual due date. Every certificate, return and acknowledgement then sits in LexComply's compliance platform, so each year's obligation closes on record.

When Battery EPR Registration Needs a Specialist

A producer selling one type of battery, with clean quantity data and an environment team that already uses the CPCB portal, can register and file without help, and some do. A specialist earns its place when you sell across categories, import equipment that contains batteries, have a contract manufacturer in the chain, or need certificates bought and evidenced every year. That is the output LexComply produces: categories mapped in writing, registration filed, targets planned, certificates checked and returns filed inside one compliance register, rather than a certificate of registration handed back and left there.

Battery EPR Registration FAQs

What is battery EPR registration?

Battery EPR registration is the registration a battery producer must obtain from the Central Pollution Control Board in Form 1(A) under Rule 4 of the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022. It is made on CPCB's centralised battery EPR portal and issued in Form 1(B).

Who needs battery EPR registration?

Every producer: a manufacturer selling batteries under its own brand, a business selling another maker's batteries under its own brand, an importer of batteries or of equipment containing them, and, since 25 October 2023, a contract manufacturer or assembler. Recyclers and refurbishers register with their State Pollution Control Board.

Do importers need battery EPR registration?

Yes. An importer of batteries, or of equipment that contains batteries, is a producer under Rule 3(1)(u) and must register with the CPCB, meet collection targets and file annual returns. For imports, the registration number may be marked on the equipment or its packaging.

How long is battery EPR registration valid?

Since the 2023 amendment, a producer's registration stays valid until it is cancelled or withdrawn, so there is no renewal cycle. What recurs every year is the collection target, the purchase of EPR certificates and the 2 annual returns, Form 1(C) and Form 3.

What are the battery EPR registration fees?

Rule 11(2) lets the CPCB set a processing fee for registration and returns, and LexComply confirms the current amount before filing. The professional fee depends on how many entities, categories and chemistries are involved. LexComply quotes both in writing before any work starts.

Which batteries are covered by the EPR rules?

All batteries regardless of chemistry, shape or use, except those in defence equipment and equipment sent into space. The Rules sort them into 4 categories: portable batteries (sealed and under 5 kg), automotive, industrial including energy storage systems, and electric vehicle batteries.

When are battery EPR returns due?

Producers file 2 annual returns, Form 1(C) on batteries placed on the market and Form 3 on the obligation met, by 30 June after the financial year. For 2025-26, the deadline was extended to 30 November 2026. Producers file no quarterly return.

What happens if a producer misses its battery EPR target?

The CPCB levies environmental compensation, which does not cancel the obligation. If the shortfall is made good within 1, 2 or 3 years, 75%, 60% or 40% of that compensation is returned. LexComply tracks each shortfall so it is closed inside that window.
