As a substance, it is non-biodegradable and thus remain in the environment for hundreds of years polluting it immensely. Humans are facing a crisis with plastic. They are one of the greatest risks to the environment despite their practicality and versatility.Plastic items are lethal to our environment and pollute it too much greater extent than we could imagine.

The Andhra Pradesh government vide its Notification No. G.O. Ms. No. 65 dt. 22.09.2022 has declared ban on plastic flex banners under the Environment (Protection) Act 1986, effective from November 1, 2022. Under the ban, no one will be allowed to manufacture or import plastic flex in the state. Any type of plastic flex printing, transporting, or displaying within the state is prohibited and is against the law.

Plastic means material which contains as an essential ingredient a high polymer such as polyethylene terephthalate, high density polyethylene, Vinyl, low density polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene resins, multi-materials like acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, polyphenylene oxide, polycarbonate, Polybutylene terephthalate.

The decision will be enforced across the state, both in urban and rural areas. All municipal corporations, municipal councils, district collectors, and zonal offices of the Zilla Parishad have been sensitised to enforce the law in their respective regions.

The Enforcing authorities are empowered for below mentioned contraventions as per the Notification:

  1. To penalise all the violators @ Rs. 100/- per sq feet of banned plastic flexi banners.
  2. To seize the banned plastic flexi banners and send for scientific disposal at the cost of violators.
  3. To prosecute violators under Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

Other Departments like Revenue, Police, Transport and GST shall also assist the enforcing authorities for effective enforcement of the Notification.

Availability of cotton banner material shall be ensured to be provided to the enterprises by Authorities of Industries and Commerce Department.
